Imran's maternal home was in Punjab, India.

According to India Today report, Imran Khan's mother Shaukat Khanum played an important role in establishing Islamia College, Jalandhar in the 1940s. But like thousands of other Muslim families, Shaukat Khanum's family also moved westwards to Punjab after 1947. Regarding this, the people of Jalandhar say that Imran and his relatives have been coming to this place from time to time. During a previous visit to Jalandhar in 2004, Imran had told journalists about the trauma his family had to face due to moving to Lahore. He said that his ancestors were settled in Jalandhar for more than 600 years before 1947.
