England’s 258 runs
Earlier, on the back of half-centuries from veteran batsmen Joe Root and Liam Dawson and a 121-run partnership for the seventh wicket, England overcame an initial shock from the Indian pacers to reach 258 runs. In the 13th over, England scored 61 runs without losing a wicket. They then lost six wickets for 107 runs by the 22nd over and the hosts looked unlikely to reach 150 runs.
A brilliant partnership between Root and Dawson
However, Root’s 76 off 76 balls and Dawson’s 68 off 83 balls lifted the team out of trouble. Root waited for Bumrah’s first two spells to end and then attacked Axar Patel’s bowling. Bumrah took one wicket with 31 runs in nine overs, while Gurnoor Brar took two wickets with 61 runs in nine overs. The famous Krishna took two wickets with 50 runs in 10 overs.
Maximum of Bumrah and Brar
England chose to bat on a pitch that bounced and helped the seaming. Bumrah, who returned after a six-week layoff, conceded just eight runs in four overs in his first spell. Jacob Bethel (14 off 31 balls) and Ben Duckett (43 off 45 balls) could not cope with his bowling, conceding no runs in 36 balls. At the other end, Prasad also bowled well and conceded 17 runs in Brar’s first over. Brar’s next over also had two fours, but in the third over he took two wickets in three balls.
