IND vs SL, 2nd Test: After a commanding performance to secure a 165-run win over Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium in Galle, Team India will want to continue the momentum in the second Test, beginning on August 23, Sunday at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. The victory in Galle ensured that Shubman Gill and co. are well in the race to play in the World Test Championship (WTC) final next year at the Kia Oval in London.
Despite winning the Test comfortably, the tourists’ playing XI could see a change for the second game in Colombo. While Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja made hay by taking wickets at will, Kuldeep struggled and did not end up with more than one across two innings. The left-arm wrist-spinner struggled to find the correct length, with the Sri Lankan batters also proactive enough not to let him settle on one by playing the sweep. Hence, the question now is whether or not the tourists will turn to the off-spinner Saransh Jain, who could be more effective than Kuldeep. The 33-year-old has picked up 188 scalps in 54 first-class games, averaging 27.30 alongside 10 four-wicket hauls and as many fifers. He also averages a serviceable 31.75 with the bat with two centuries at the first-class level.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka have yet another injury concern after Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka were already ruled out of the first Test. Along with them, Dinesh Chandimal will also miss the fixture due to suffering a concussion while fielding in Galle. Sonal Dinusha emerged as a big positive for the hosts, scoring a century in the first innings, followed by an 84 in the second, while Prabath Jayasuriya, Asitha Fernando and Keshara Nuwantha bowled well too. But what Sri Lanka desperately need is a marked improvement from their top order.
