India and Nepal strengthen cooperation through development, digital connectivity initiatives

External Affairs Minister Dr. S.Jaishankar met Nepal Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal in New Delhi on Saturday and highlighted several major milestones in bilateral cooperation, ranging from post-earthquake reconstruction projects to digital payments and language technology partnerships.

Following the meeting, Jaishankar shared details of ongoing India-supported initiatives in Nepal, describing them as important steps in strengthening the long-standing relationship between the two neighboring countries.

The discussions reflected the broad scope of cooperation between India and Nepal across infrastructure, technology, cultural preservation, and financial connectivity.

Reconstruction projects handed over under earthquake recovery programme

Jaishankar said India has virtually handed over 72 health facilities and 12 cultural heritage projects developed under the reconstruction programme launched after Nepal’s devastating 2015 earthquake. The projects form part of India’s assistance efforts aimed at supporting Nepal’s recovery and rebuilding process following the disaster. The health facilities are expected to strengthen healthcare access in different regions, while the cultural heritage projects focus on restoring historically significant sites affected by the earthquake.

The reconstruction programme has remained one of the key pillars of India-Nepal development cooperation over the past decade.

Cross-border digital payments receive boost

A major highlight of the engagement was the joint launch of the linkage between UPI India and the National Payments Interface Nepal. According to Jaishankar, the initiative is designed to facilitate cross-border personal remittancesmaking financial transactions more convenient for people in both countries. The linkage represents another step toward expanding digital financial connectivity in South Asia and improving ease of transactions between citizens of India and Nepal.

Officials view the development as an important addition to growing economic and technological cooperation between the two nations.

MoU signed for language technology collaboration

During the meeting, both sides also witnessed the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Digital India Bhashini and Kathmandu University. The agreement focuses on jointly developing a national digital infrastructure for a “Voice First” language translation platform for Nepal. The initiative aims to leverage language technology and digital innovation to improve communication accessibility and multilingual digital services.

Officials described the project as a significant step in expanding technological collaboration between educational and innovation institutions of both countries.

Bilateral cooperation continues to expand

The meeting underscored the growing scope of India-Nepal relations, which extend across infrastructure development, healthcare, culture, education, digital technology, and financial integration. Regular high-level engagements between leaders and ministers from both countries continue to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The latest announcements highlight the increasing emphasis on technology-driven partnerships alongside traditional development assistance programmes.

What happens next?

With multiple projects now entering implementation and operational phases, attention will focus on the impact of these initiatives on citizens in both countries. The newly launched payment linkage, reconstruction projects, and language technology partnership are expected to further deepen bilateral cooperation in the coming years.

For now, the meeting between Dr. S.Jaishankar and Shisir Khanal has reinforced India’s continued commitment to supporting Nepal through development, connectivity, and innovation-focused partnerships.
