India cornered Pakistan in United Nations, gave blunt reply on Kashmir

New Delhi: On the platform of the United Nations Security Council, India once again gave a strong reply to Pakistan and made it clear that it is necessary to review international organizations and their old structures from time to time. India said that decades-old proposals and arbitration arrangements should be examined in accordance with the current global circumstances, as every arrangement cannot always remain relevant in the changing geopolitical scenario.

Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish presented India’s side

India’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, presented India’s side in the UNSC’s ‘Area Formula’ meeting. The meeting was co-chaired by China and Pakistan. In his address, he underlined the important difference between the resolutions passed under Chapter VI and Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter and said that the nature and objectives of both are different.

Ambassador Harish said that the resolutions passed under Chapter VII are related to situations where international peace and security are threatened, peace has been disturbed or incidents of aggression have come to light. In such cases, the Security Council gets the right to take concrete steps. He warned that lack of compliance with these resolutions could affect the global security system and the international law-based system.

In contrast, the proposals under Chapter VI are made for peaceful resolution of disputes. In these, measures like negotiation, mediation, conciliation and arbitration are resorted to. India said that such proposals are prepared keeping in mind the political circumstances of that time. Therefore they cannot be considered immutable and relevant forever.

India gave the example of Palestine

Referring to long-pending international issues, India gave the example of Palestine and said that as the circumstances there changed with time, changes were also made in the methods of resolution. On this basis, India indicated that the old arbitration structures and proposals should be reviewed.

India reacted strongly when Pakistan raised the issue of Jammu and Kashmir during the meeting. Ambassador Harish said that Pakistan has tried to use the platform politically. He reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and internal part of India and there has been no change in this situation.

India also said that as part of the ongoing reform efforts in the United Nations, the old resolutions and arrangements of the Security Council should also be reviewed, so that they remain in line with the current global realities and challenges. India believes that only timely reforms can strengthen the effectiveness and credibility of international institutions.
