New Delhi, 25 July. India’s first hydrogen fuel cell train was flagged off last week on July 17 on the Jind-Sonipat railway section in the Delhi region. Since its inception, the train has successfully completed a journey of over 1,200 kilometres, saving over 3,200 liters of diesel. This train emits only water vapor with zero tailpipe carbon emissions and is considered a significant achievement towards clean and sustainable transportation of Indian Railways.
Electricity is made from hydrogen and oxygen
This train generates electricity within the fuel cell itself through the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The train operates on this electrical energy. In this entire process only water vapor is released as a by-product. There is no smoke or carbon emissions from the tailpipe, making it the cleanest option among current rail propulsion technologies.
Project completely prepared with indigenous technology
This project, developed under the leadership of Indian Railways, is a completely indigenous initiative. This 10-coach train has two hydrogen driving power cars, which jointly provide 2,400 kilowatts of power. Apart from this, lithium iron phosphate batteries and hydrogen cylinders have also been installed in the train, which strengthen its energy system.
First hydrogen storage facility built in Jind
Under this project, the first dedicated hydrogen storage facility of Indian Railways has been set up in Jind. Green hydrogen can be stored here at a pressure of up to 500 Bar, while fuel filling arrangements are available at a pressure of 350 Bar. The total storage capacity of this facility is approximately 3,000 kg.
Multi-tier system for security
The train is fitted with multiple independent safety systems that automatically detect hydrogen leakage, over-temperature, fire and smoke. Along with this, automatic shut-off system, continuous ventilation, compliance with international safety standards and all necessary testing and verification are also ensured. After successful operation on Jind-Sonipat railway section, its testing will soon be started on Delhi route also.
Important steps towards clean transportation
India’s hydrogen fuel cell train is not only a technological achievement but also a major step towards establishing an indigenous hydrogen rail ecosystem. The project reflects India’s commitment towards sustainable and zero-emission rail transport and lays a strong foundation for its future expansion and global leadership in clean transport.
