India will have little time to recover from a demanding schedule and adjust to New Zealand conditions when they take on the hosts in the first of five T20 Internationals at Hagley Oval on Thursday.
The series opener comes just days after India's rain-hit T20I decider against the West Indies in Bengaluru on October 17 ended in a 2-2 draw. The team has managed only one training session in Christchurch, raising questions about its readiness for a challenging contest against a New Zealand side expected to field most of its first-choice players.
India's schedule has been particularly demanding, with their Asian Games gold medal-winning campaign in Japan ending on October 3, followed by the West Indies series beginning in Lucknow three days later.
The visitors will also be without two key players. Jasprit Bumrah has been rested with the Test series in mind, while Hardik Pandya has not featured in international cricket since the T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad in March.
New Zealand, meanwhile, will look to capitalize on home conditions and a strong pace-bowling attack featuring Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, Jacob Duffy, Kyle Jamieson and Blair Tickner. Injuries to Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra could open up a place in the top order for Devon Conway alongside Finn Allen and Tim Seifert.
India's biggest challenge could be finalizing the playing XI. The team management may have to balance its spin-bowling all-rounders with additional pace options, potentially leaving out Naman Dhir despite his encouraging performances against the West Indies. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is expected to feature, while the availability of Varun Chakaravarthy could influence the choice of bowling combination.
Conditions could further complicate matters. Although the days have been pleasant, temperatures are expected to drop around the 8 pm local start, while fresh pitches could assist seamers. Dew may also influence the toss, with captains potentially preferring to chase.
India, however, have a favorable recent record against New Zealand, winning their last two bilateral T20I series in the country and 16 of their 20 completed matches against the Black Caps since January 2020.
Ishan Kishan will also have a personal milestone in sight. He needs seven runs to surpass Suryakumar Yadav's tally of 1,164 T20I runs in a calendar year by an Indian.
