Now the world will taste the taste of UP! First sea consignment of 12.5 tonnes of Dussehri-Langra mango reached Dubai
UP Dussehri Export: The famous Dussehri and Langra mangoes of Uttar Pradesh are now creating a new identity in foreign countries. For the first time, a commercial consignment of mango has been sent from UP to Dubai via sea route. This successful initiative is being considered a major achievement for the export of Indian mangoes. This is expected to strengthen the reach of Indian mangoes in the international market along with better prices for the farmers.
This time, about 12.5 tonnes of Dussehri and Langra mangoes from Amroha were packed in 40 feet refrigerated containers and sent to Dubai by sea route. This consignment successfully reached Al Aweer Fruit and Vegetable Market there. Till now most of the mangoes were sent by air, but this is the first time that the sea route was used on such a large scale.
Got big benefits at low cost
Sea transport is much cheaper than air freight. For this reason the cost of export reduced this time. According to officials, farmers got direct benefit from this and they could get about Rs 15 to Rs 20 more per kg by selling mangoes.
Quality remained intact even after 25 days of travel
Maintaining the quality of mango during a long journey is the biggest challenge. For this, packing was done scientifically in the modern packhouse of Amroha. Also the METWASH technology developed by ICAR-CISH was used. About 90 percent of the consignment that reached Dubai after about 25 days was found to be completely salable.
APEDA and scientific institutions got cooperation
Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and Central Institute of Subtropical Horticulture (ICAR-CISH) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research played an important role in making this export campaign successful. Both the institutes provided technical support in packing, quality control and export process.
Demand for UP mangoes will increase in Gulf countries
This consignment, which reached Dubai, was delivered to Lulu Group, the leading retail network of UAE. Experts believe that after this success, the demand for Indian mango may increase in other international markets including Gulf countries. This will provide new export markets to farmers in future and will also strengthen the horticulture sector.
