India, Nepal step up coordination to tackle cross-border crime, drug trafficking

Kathmandu: Security officials from Nepal and India discussed ways to curb cross-border criminal activities and illegal trade at a meeting, deciding to enhance joint border patrols and increase regular information exchange.

The coordination meeting of security officers from three districts of Nepal’s Madhesh province and adjoining districts of India was held in the province’s Jaleshwar city Saturday.

It was jointly chaired by Chief District Officer of Mahottari district Indra Dev Yadav and District Magistrate of Bihar’s Sitamadhi Tanay Sultania.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed various contemporary issues related to cross-border security and reviewed progress made in the implementation of decisions taken during the previous meetings, according to officials.

The two sides also discussed strategies they could adopt to combat cross-border crimes, including arms and narcotic drugs trafficking, human trafficking and border security and maintenance of border posts.

Underscoring the importance of mutual coordination and cooperation, they decided to broaden the scope of joint patrols and increase regular exchange of information on cross-border crimes, officials said.

From the Nepalese side, chief district officers of Sarlahi and Rautahat attended the meeting. Superintendent of Police of Bihar’s Sitamadhi Amit Ranjan attended the meeting from the Indian side, along with various security officers.
