CNG-LPG can be cheaper, India is bringing direct gas pipeline from this country; PAK will get a big blow!
India Oman Gas Pipeline: Iran-America tension and the increasing threat in the Strait of Hormuz have forced many countries of the world to find new ways of oil and gas supply. India is also going to take a big step in this direction. The central government is preparing to lay a huge undersea gas pipeline at a cost of about ₹ 40,000 crore, which will directly connect India to Oman.
This project has been named Middle East-India Deepwater Pipeline (MEIDP). Its objective is to strengthen India’s energy security and reduce the impact of foreign crises.
Gas supply from Oman directly to Gujarat
Under this ambitious project, the pipeline will leave the coast of Oman and reach Gujarat directly. This route will be completely maritime, that is, no other country’s border or land will be used in between. The government believes that with this, India will continue to get natural gas without any interruption and will be the safest option for energy import. In future, there is also a plan to connect this pipeline to the gas network of Gulf countries like UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
Pakistan’s role is completely over
India has already worked on several pipeline projects to bring gas from Iran and Central Asia, but Pakistan remained the biggest hurdle. The IPI (Iran-Pakistan-India) pipeline and TAPI (Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India) projects could not proceed due to political tensions and security concerns.
Through the new sea pipeline, India will completely end its dependence on Pakistan. This will also eliminate threats like transit fees, political pressure and stopping supply. This step is considered very important for both India’s strategic and energy security.
Big challenge of laying pipeline under the sea
Although the project avoids political difficulties, the technical challenges are extremely difficult. The pipeline will be laid in the Arabian Sea at a depth of about 3.5 kilometers. The sea pressure at such a depth is extremely high, hence special steel, strong coating and high-tech welding technology will have to be used in the pipeline.
If any leakage or technical fault occurs in future, it will not be easy to repair. This will require special robotic systems and heavy ships, due to which the maintenance cost can also be very high.
Why does India need this project?
India is among the world’s largest energy importers. At present the country consumes about 190 million cubic meters of gas every day, which can increase to 365 million cubic meters by 2030. India does not even have a big emergency backup of gas.
In such a situation, this pipeline coming from Oman can provide permanent and safe gas supply to India. It is being told that about 31 million cubic meters of gas will be able to reach India every day through this route. This will provide long-term stability to industry, power generation and domestic gas supply.
Can CNG and LPG become cheaper?
If this pipeline is successful, it can have a big impact on the prices of CNG and LPG in the country. Currently, India imports LNG through ships, in which the gas has to be first converted into liquid, then brought by sea vessels and later converted into gas again. This entire process involves huge expenses.
After the commencement of the pipeline, there is a possibility of reduction in transportation cost by 40-50 percent. Besides, ship hire, maritime tax and insurance expenses which increase during war will also be reduced. This will reduce the expenses of gas companies and common people can get cheaper CNG and LPG.
India’s energy picture may change by 2035
According to experts, this project may take 5 to 7 years to become fully operational. That means, gas supply from this pipeline is expected to start between 2033 and 2035. If this plan is successful, India will get the safest and most sustainable way for energy.
In the era of Hormuz crisis and global tension, this project is not just a pipeline but is being considered a big step towards India’s energy independence. In the coming years, this pipeline can become the backbone of the country’s economy and energy needs.
