Pride of India on National Sports Day! Know what countries won on the world stage in 2026?

Every year on August 29, India’s National Sports Day (National Sports Day 2026) is celebrated on the birthday of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. Even in 2026, this day holds special significance for Indian sports. In the first eight months of the year, India has achieved one success after another on the world stage.

India created history by winning the T20 World Cup (cricket) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in March. Suryakumar Yadav’s team beat New Zealand to become the first nation to win the T20 World Cup for the second time in a row and the third time overall.

This was followed by India’s impressive performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games as well. India finished fourth with 39 medals despite not being on the list for the five most important games.

Record 7 gold in boxing
Indian boxers won 10 medals in Glasgow, including seven gold. No country has won so many boxing golds in one Commonwealth Games before. The success of Jasmine Lamboria, Sakshi Chowdhury, Preeti Pawar and Arundhati Chowdhury has caught the eye. Sachin and Ankush also made India proud by winning gold in the men’s category.

Mirabai Chanu once again proved her superiority by winning gold in the 48 kg category. He lifted 190 kg and set games record in snatch, clean and jerk and total three events.

Gulvir’s twin history in athletics
Within days of winning the bronze in the 10,000m, Gulvir Singh also won a medal in the 5,000m. He is the first Indian track and field athlete to win two individual medals in the same Commonwealth Games.

Neeraj’s silver, Yash’s bronze
Neeraj Chopra won silver after missing the previous Commonwealth Games due to injury. On the other hand, Yash Bir Singh won bronze with a personal best throw in his first Games.

Since judo’s inception at the Commonwealth Games, India has won a medal but never won a gold. Ending that wait, Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh won gold on the same day. India got a total of four medals by winning two golds, one silver and one bronze. This is India’s best performance in Judo at the Commonwealth Games.

India wins first gold in Commonwealth Para Athletics with Sharmila Dhankhar. After a wait of almost 20 years, a new history is coming for India in this category.

A total of seven medals won by India from Para Athletics. Dilip Gavit, Soman Rana and many other athletes, including the scintillating performances, wrote a new chapter.

And there are bigger dreams ahead. Ahmedabad will host Commonwealth Games in 2030. On Major Dhyan Chand’s birthday, the country is looking not only at past glories but also at the future of Indian sports.
