India thrash Australia 5-0, enter Thomas Cup quarters
India delivered a commanding performance to storm into the quarterfinals of the Thomas Cup 2026, defeating Australia 5-0 in their second Group A tie in Horsens on Monday, April 27.
The 2022 champions followed up their earlier 4-1 win over Canada with another dominant display, securing a spot in the knockout stage and moving to the top of Group A standings, just ahead of defending champions China.
Dominant run in group stage
With two convincing victories, India have established themselves as strong contenders in the tournament. Only the top two teams from each group progress to the quarterfinals, and India have comfortably sealed qualification.
They will next face China on Wednesday in a crucial tie to determine the group toppers. China have also been in top form, registering identical wins over Australia (5-0) and Canada (4-1).
Lakshya Sen sets the tone
India made a single change to their lineup, bringing in H. S. Prannoy in place of Kidambi Srikanth.
Lakshya Sen opened the proceedings with a solid 21-14, 21-16 win over Ephraim Stephen Sam, giving India an early lead.
Youngster Ayush Shetty extended the advantage with a clinical 21-8, 21-6 victory over Shrey Dhand in just 26 minutes.
Doubles pair seals the tie
India’s star doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty ensured there would be no comeback from Australia, defeating Rizky Hidayat and Jack Yu 21-14, 21-16.
Their win gave India an unassailable 3-0 lead, sealing the tie.
Clean sweep completed
H. S. Prannoy then delivered a convincing 21-11, 21-17 win over Rishi Honda Boopathy to extend the lead.
The men’s doubles pair of Hariharan Amsakarunan and M. R. Arjun completed the clean sweep with a 21-12, 21-10 victory, sealing a comprehensive 5-0 result.
Eye on China clash
India, who were eliminated by China in the quarterfinals of the previous edition, will look to gain momentum and possibly top the group when they face the defending champions next.
Importantly, a top finish in the group could help India avoid a tough draw in the knockout stages.
Conclusion
India’s emphatic win over Australia underlines their strong form and depth in the squad. With confidence high and key players delivering, the upcoming clash against China will be a crucial test as India aim for another deep run in the Thomas Cup.
