India-US Trade Deal: Emphasis on India-US compact, mega trade deal may be finalized soon…

Business Desk – India-US Trade Deal: Efforts to give a new direction to the trade relations between India and America have intensified. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump have instructed their respective officials to prepare a comprehensive trade agreement as soon as possible keeping in mind the interests of both the countries.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed on Thursday that this important meeting of the two leaders took place after about 16 months during the G7 Summit, in which strengthening bilateral relations was discussed in detail.

Emphasis on reducing tension and increasing partnership

The main objective of this high-level conversation is said to be to reduce the recent tension between India and America and to take cooperation to a new level. Both the leaders have instructed the officials to prepare a concrete framework to increase cooperation in areas like trade, defense and technology, so that the economic and strategic interests of both the countries can be strengthened.

Review of “COMPACT” on Defense and Trade Cooperation

During the meeting, PM Modi and President Trump appreciated the ongoing work under the India-US Compact. This initiative was launched in Washington in February 2025, which aims to promote defense cooperation, trade partnership and joint development in the technology sector between India and the US. Both the leaders agreed that this cooperation will be deepened so that the citizens of both the countries can get direct benefits from it.

Issue of maritime safety and death of Indian crew members

Maritime security and recent tragic incidents were also discussed in this meeting. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised President Trump for his efforts to establish peace and stop war in West Asia.

This issue was also important because recently, during the US military action in the Gulf of Oman, three Indian crew members aboard a merchant ship were killed, which created an atmosphere of concern and resentment in India. During this, PM Modi talked about giving top priority to safe trade on sea routes and safety of sailors.

Trying to improve relationships after past tensions

In the last few months, there was some sourness in the relations between India and America. One reason for this is said to be the additional tariffs imposed on Indian products by the American government.

Apart from this, President Trump’s claim regarding the military tension between India and Pakistan in May 2025 had also raised controversy, in which he had said that America stopped the war between the two countries and saved millions of lives. Rejecting this claim, India had clarified that the conflict was resolved through bilateral talks.

Along with this, America’s new immigration policy and increase in H-1B visa fees had also created dissatisfaction in the relations between the two countries. However, now both sides seem to be leaving these issues behind and moving towards strengthening relations and increasing cooperation.
