When Team India takes to the field at Eden Park on November 4, 2026, they will face New Zealand's fearful bowling line-up, with history weighing heavily on their shoulders.
Since these two countries first faced off in Eden Park almost half a century ago, it has become an ironclad fortress for the Black Caps, proving to be one of the hardest-hitting venues for India in the Southern Hemisphere.
Out of 11 One Day Internationals played in Auckland since the 1970s, India have only won 4. They have suffered 6 losses and 1 tie. This is a large disadvantage for India who have a competitive record against New Zealand. Auckland is a unique location in the world of cricket.
A Rivalry Born in 1976: India vs New Zealand
India made their debut in Auckland in a historic ODI match on February 22nd 1976. However, New Zealand had an excellent start to their innings in the summer sport, resulting in an 80-run victory in the first match.
Since then, the ground has been home to some magical moments from the Indian team.
The Breakthrough (1994): A brilliant 7-wicket victory saw India break the Auckland curse on March 27th 1994 thanks to a sensational Sachin Tendulkar.
The Nail-Biter (2003): India produced a dramatic 1-wicket victory on January 11th 2003.
The Heartstopper (2014): On January 25th 2014, both sides gave us a dramatic tied score.
World Cup Victory (2015): India won their only match at the ground against non-New Zealand opposition by beating Zimbabwe by 6 wickets in 2015 in the Cricket World Cup.
The Ghosts of 2022
India had their last match at Eden Park on November 25th 2022. This was a harsh reminder of how quickly an ODI can be lost here.
India came to bat first and put down what looked like a monster score of 306/7. Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer all scored brilliantly in a solid half-century each. New Zealand were kept to a minimum thanks to Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson grabbing three wickets each.
Despite a fast 2-wicket burst from India's young speedster Umran Malik, the target was extremely easy to achieve for the home side. Tom Latham was sensational and scored an unbeaten 145 to give India no chance. He combined well with captain Kane Williamson, who scored another solid half-century.
Black Caps had an easy time of it, scoring 309/3 in just 47.1 overs. This meant they had an easy 7-wicket win with plenty of overs to spare and solidified their control at this ground.

Rewriting History in 2026
As they prepare to start their five-match ODI series in Auckland on November 4, India will have a lot to contend with besides the 50 overs of bowling.
The 2027 World Cup is fast approaching and they'll need to overcome the Eden Park challenge to keep the series alive. They'll also want to prove that they can finally conquer one of the toughest away venues in cricket.
