New Delhi. The first day of the three-day warm-up match between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo did not go entirely as expected for the Indian team. Sri Lanka Cricket XI won the toss and elected to bat first, scoring 363 for 8 in 90 overs. The hosts’ batsmen maintained pressure on the Indian bowlers from the outset, scoring easily for a long time. Although the Indian bowlers made a comeback in the second and third sessions, taking wickets at regular intervals, they were unable to prevent Sri Lanka from reaching 363.
Nishan Madushka and Ravindu Rasantha, opening the innings for Sri Lanka Cricket XI, troubled the Indian bowlers in the initial stages. Madushka scored 66 runs, while Rasantha made 71 runs. Together, they shared a 110-run partnership for the first wicket. India had to wait a long time for the opening wicket, while the Sri Lankan batsmen kept the scoreboard moving rapidly. Team captain Sonal Dinusha then scored a half-century and was dismissed for 52 runs.
Indian bowlers struggled to take wickets in the first session, but after that, the team adjusted their strategy and made a comeback in the match. Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Suthar, and Kuldeep Yadav consistently challenged the Sri Lanka XI batsmen. The spin department, including Jadeja and Kuldeep, took wickets at crucial moments, controlling the host team’s run rate to some extent. Gurnur Brar also took a wicket and was the key bowler in the fast bowling department.
However, the Indian bowling performance was not entirely satisfactory. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna went wicketless, while Saransh Jain also failed to achieve success. Some bowlers found it challenging to restrict runs, with their economy rates exceeding four runs per over. This performance can be considered an important indicator for the team management in the practice matches being played before the Test series. The inability to take early wickets with the new ball was a concern for the Indian team.
Sri Lanka XI also showcased their batting depth by scoring 363 runs in 90 overs. While this was a practice match primarily aimed at preparing the players for the upcoming Test series, the Indian bowlers also had the opportunity to test themselves in these conditions. The spinners’ successes certainly provided some relief, but the fast bowlers will be expected to perform more effectively.
KL Rahul captained the Indian team in this match, as regular captain Shubman Gill was unable to take the field on the first day due to a finger injury. The team management will continue to monitor Gill’s injury and availability. This warm-up match is an important opportunity for India to assess their players’ form, fitness, and acclimatization to the conditions before the Test series, which begins on August 15th. Sri Lanka XI’s 363 runs on the first day certainly indicates that the Indian bowling unit needs to improve both its strategy and performance before the Test matches.
