The opening match of India’s upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka has a new destination. Delhi was originally scheduled to host the series opener on December 13, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed a change of venue. The contest will now take place in Visakhapatnam, moving away from the national capital following concerns over weather conditions and ongoing stadium work. Here is why the venue was changed and what fans need to know.
India vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI: What Has Changed?
The first Muthoot FinCorp ODI between India and Sri Lanka will now be played at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on December 13, 2026.
The match was initially allotted to Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. However, the BCCI confirmed the relocation after receiving a request from the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA).
The date of the fixture remains unchanged. Only the host venue has been revised, with Visakhapatnam stepping in to stage the opening encounter of the three-match ODI series.
Why Was The India vs Sri Lanka ODI Shifted From Delhi?
According to the BCCI, the decision followed the DDCA’s request, which highlighted two major concerns– potential weather disruption and scheduled renovation work at the stadium.
The timing of the fixture also presents a challenge for the Delhi venue. With the match scheduled for December 13, the association sought a change to avoid possible interruptions and ensure the ground is ready to host an international contest. The board accepted the request and moved the game to Visakhapatnam.
Why Was Visakhapatnam Chosen As IND vs SL New Venue?
The ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium is an established international cricket venue and has hosted several matches involving the Indian men’s national team.
Located in Andhra Pradesh, the ground offers a fresh setting for the opening ODI. Visakhapatnam has also featured regularly on India’s international cricket calendar, making it a familiar destination for players and supporters.
