Indian 3 is back: Kamal Haasan-Shankar film revived

Chennai: Indian 3 is officially back on track, with Lyca Productions confirming the revival of the long-awaited Kamal Haasan and Shankar film nearly two years after the release of Indian 2.

The production house unveiled a new poster on Thursday, October 8, carrying the message, “Senapathy is back with zero tolerance. The resurgence begins in #Indian3 War Mode.” The announcement confirms that work on the third instalment of the popular franchise will move forward after months of uncertainty surrounding the project.

Kamal Haasan will return as Senapathy, the freedom fighter-turned-vigilante he first portrayed in Shankar’s 1996 blockbuster Indian. The character returned in Indian 2, which released in July 2024, and will once again be at the centre of the third film.

Lyca Productions announces Indian 3 revival

The future of Indian 3 had remained uncertain following the underwhelming theatrical performance of Indian 2.

Although a glimpse of the third film was included at the end of Indian 2, questions were subsequently raised over whether the project would be completed and released. Reports earlier suggested that director Shankar could move ahead with other commitments, leaving the sequel in limbo.

Lyca Productions has now put those doubts to rest with its latest announcement.

The new poster describes the project as Indian 3: War Mode, signalling the return of Senapathy and positioning the film as the next chapter of the franchise. Director Shankar also shared the announcement on social media, confirming that the project is moving forward.

The development marks a significant change in the status of a film that had been uncertain for several months.

Kamal Haasan returns as Senapathy

Kamal Haasan will reprise his role as Senapathy, the iconic vigilante introduced in the original Indian.

In the 1996 film, Haasan played two characters — Senapathy, a former freedom fighter who takes the law into his own hands to fight corruption, and his corrupt son Chandru.

The character of Senapathy returned almost three decades later in Indian 2. The sequel followed the ageing vigilante as he resumed his campaign against corruption and wrongdoing.

The third film is expected to expand the character’s history and family story. Reports have described Indian 3 as a prequel that explores Senapathy’s past and the story of his father, Veerasekaran Balram.

The film was already teased at the end of Indian 2, giving audiences a preview of the next chapter before the second instalment had finished its theatrical run.

Indian 3 cast includes Indian 2 actors

Several members of the Indian 2 cast are set to return for the third film.

The returning actors include Siddharth, Priya Bhavani Shankar, S J Suryah and Bobby Simha. Kajal Aggarwal is also associated with the film.

Siddharth played Chitra Aravindhan in Indian 2, while Priya Bhavani Shankar portrayed Aarthi Thangavel.

S J Suryah and Bobby Simha were also part of the previous instalment.

The continuation of the cast is expected to help Indian 3 carry forward storylines introduced in the second film, although the makers have not revealed the complete plot of the upcoming instalment.

What happened to Indian 3 after Indian 2?

The revival comes after a difficult period for the franchise.

Indian 2 was one of the most anticipated Tamil films of 2024 because it reunited Kamal Haasan and Shankar nearly 28 years after the original.

However, the film received a mixed response and failed to meet the commercial expectations surrounding the reunion.

That performance subsequently created uncertainty around Indian 3. Although substantial portions of the third film had reportedly been shot alongside Indian 2, its future depended on decisions regarding the remaining production and release strategy. Recent reports suggested that only additional shooting and other post-production work remained.

The latest announcement indicates that the makers have chosen to complete the project rather than abandon it.

Indian franchise began in 1996

The Indian franchise began with Shankar’s 1996 film starring Kamal Haasan in a dual role.

The original film introduced Senapathy as a former freedom fighter who becomes a vigilante after becoming disillusioned with corruption.

The film became a major success and established the character as one of the memorable vigilante figures in Tamil cinema.

Nearly three decades later, Shankar and Haasan reunited for Indian 2.

The sequel continued Senapathy’s fight against corruption while introducing a new generation of characters. It was released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, with the Telugu version titled Bharateeyudu 2 and the Hindi version Hindustani 2.

The decision to develop a third instalment was revealed through the footage attached to the end of Indian 2.

Indian 3 enters ‘War Mode’

The latest poster gives the third film a new promotional identity with the phrase “War Mode” and the line “The resurgence begins”.

The messaging suggests that the makers want to present Indian 3 as a fresh push for the franchise following the setback faced by Indian 2.

However, Lyca Productions has not yet announced an official theatrical release date.

A summer 2027 release has been reported as a possible target, but that remains a reported release window rather than a date formally announced by the production house.

The immediate priority appears to be completing the remaining work on the film.

Shankar and Kamal Haasan reunite again

Indian 3 marks another collaboration between Kamal Haasan and Shankar, one of the most prominent actor-director partnerships in Tamil cinema.

The original Indian became a landmark commercial film, while the sequel brought the pair together after a gap of nearly three decades.

The third film now carries the additional challenge of restoring audience confidence in the franchise after the response to Indian 2.

For Shankar, the project also comes after Game Changer, his Telugu-language film starring Ram Charan, which received a mixed response.

Kamal Haasan, meanwhile, continues to have several projects in his lineup, making the scheduling of Indian 3 an important part of its return to production.

Indian 3 gets a second chance

Lyca Productions’ latest announcement brings an end to the uncertainty surrounding Indian 3, at least for now.

Kamal Haasan is set to return as Senapathy, Shankar is back at the helm, and several actors from Indian 2 will continue into the next chapter.

The project now has an opportunity to expand the story introduced in the first two films while exploring Senapathy’s past and the origins of his vigilante mission.

Whether Indian 3 can overcome the disappointment surrounding its predecessor will ultimately depend on its story, execution and audience response.

For now, however, Senapathy is officially back — and the Indian franchise has entered “War Mode”.
