The selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the 15-member Indian squad for the upcoming 3-match home ODI series against West Indies. Keeping in mind the upcoming big tournaments, the selectors have prepared a balanced mix of young and experienced players in the team. In this series, the captaincy of the Indian team will be in the hands of young batsman Shubman Gill, while KL Rahul has been given the responsibility of vice-captain.
The biggest and surprising thing about this team selection was the inclusion of two young players who have consistently shone in domestic cricket and league matches—Punjab all-rounder Naman Dheer and Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler Aaqib Nabi—in the national ODI team for the first time. At the same time, the presence of veteran batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as well as experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in the team will strengthen the Indian camp.

Naman Dheer (all-rounder, Punjab): The aggressive batsman from Punjab impressed the selectors with his power-hitting, finishing ability and useful off-spin bowling while playing for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He has also scored runs at a strike rate of more than 100 in the limited overs domestic tournament Vijay Hazare Trophy, due to which he has been included as an effective option in the lower-middle order.

Aaqib Nabi (fast bowler, Jammu and Kashmir): This young seamer from Jammu and Kashmir has made headlines for his ability to swing on both sides while playing for Surrey in domestic cricket and England's County Championship. Aaqib, who took 56 wickets in 36 List-A matches of the domestic season and had a tight economy rate, has got a place in the ODI squad for the first time as a backup in the Indian pace battery.

Hardik Pandya: Regarding Hardik's fitness, the process of 'return to play' is going on from the National Cricket Academy/Center of Excellence. The selectors want him to prove his match-fitness by bowling full 10 overs in competitive cricket before returning to the senior team. For this reason, fast bowling is an alternative to all-rounder in place of Hardik. Nitish Kumar Reddy Has been given preference in the team.

Rishabh Pant: Rishabh Pant has been given the captaincy of the Rest of India team for the 'Iranian Cup' with the aim of giving match practice in red-ball cricket, due to which he has been kept out of this short ODI series. In his absence, KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel will take over the responsibility of wicketkeeping.
