In this context, Railways is preparing to make changes in its passenger system with the aim of making the railway ticket booking process faster, easier and transparent. After this new upgrade, the currently working system will be able to handle more load than before.

According to Railways, after the new changes, the passenger reservation system will be able to handle more than 1.5 lakh ticket bookings and more than 40 lakh passenger inquiries simultaneously in a minute. Why is Railways upgrading PRS?

Let us tell you that online ticket booking in Railways is increasing very fast, due to which Railways has decided to upgrade the ‘Passenger Reservation System’ (PRS). According to Railway reports, out of the total 65.08 crore reserved tickets booked between June 2025 and June 2026, about 89 percent (57.90 crore) tickets were booked online. By July 2026, this digital share will further increase to 89.84 percent. At present, Railways has more than 5.72 crore online user accounts and more than 5 lakh people are using the website or app simultaneously. Keeping these things in mind, Railways is going to make this new change.

How does the Passenger Reservation System work?

This system handles tasks like ticket booking, ticket cancellation, seat allotment, waiting list, RAC, reservation chart and passenger enquiry. That means all the websites and apps for booking railway tickets work through PRS only.

Increase in Tatkal ticket booking

According to the ticket booking platform IRCTC, the beta website was launched on July 15, 2026, after which there has been a rise in Tatkal ticket booking. According to IRCTC, earlier Tatkal tickets used to take more time to book, but now after the implementation of the new system, there has been a record percentage increase in Tatkal ticket booking within three minutes. Railways says that after the implementation of this new system, the process of booking Tatkal tickets has become faster and transparent.

PRS will be prepared with modern technology

According to Railways, the new passenger reservation system will be prepared with modern technology. This may include technologies like AI machine learning, big data analytics, cloud computing, blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT) and AR/VR. Let us tell you that the existing PRS was launched in 2010 on itanium server and open VMS platform. Railways says that now there is a need to make changes in this system, so that the convenience of the passengers can be eased and the ticket booking process can be speeded up.
