Strong growth in freight traffic continues
Indian Railways carried 141.3 million tonnes of freight during July 2026, as against 129.7 million tonnes during the corresponding month of the previous year, showing a growth of 9 per cent. This strong performance reflects sustained demand across key sectors of the economy and continued efforts to improve freight logistics and operational efficiency.

Increased shipments of key commodities support industry, agriculture and energy security
Several major commodity groups registered healthy growth on a year-on-year basis during July 2026. Iron ore carriages increased by 22.2 per cent, coal by 11.5 per cent, food grains by 11.5 per cent, fertilisers by 12 per cent and other commodities by 12.1 per cent, reflecting robust demand from infrastructure, manufacturing and agriculture sectors. With the increase in coal demand at thermal power plants, Indian Railways has increased the supply of indigenous coal to power stations by 20 per cent in July as compared to the corresponding month last year.

Upward momentum continues in merchandise revenue
The increase in freight movement has resulted in an additional freight revenue of ₹1,137 crore as compared to July 2025, which shows a growth of 8%. Among the zonal railways, East Central Railway (33%), Eastern Railway (33%), West Central Railway (23%) and South Eastern Railway (10.33%) have registered significant growth in freight revenue.

Increasing passenger traffic, increasing rail connectivity and service delivery
Indian Railways transported 63.35 crore passengers during July 2026, as against 62.19 crore in the same month last year. Passenger traffic continued to grow in both suburban and non-suburban sections, reflecting the growing preference for rail travel across the country.
