Delhi. The government has increased surveillance on social media platforms over harmful and illegal content online, including child sexual abuse material, 'deepfakes'. The government had also issued a notice to Meta on how to deal with such content and recently summoned top officials of the social media company to India.
The central government has stepped up pressure on all platforms to rapidly remove harmful content, impose strict security measures and ensure greater accountability. Also, they have been given a clear warning that non-compliance with Indian law will not be tolerated.
Meta's arrogance gone
Meta Company has agreed to report cases involving child sexual exploitation to appropriate law enforcement agencies. Government sources gave this information on Tuesday. Sources in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said that online safety of children is a “fundamental principle” for any social media platform operating in India and it “cannot be compromised at all”.

Underscoring the government's strong stance on the responsibility of digital platforms in protecting minors from harmful content and activities, it said action will be taken against platforms that do not take appropriate steps to protect children online.

According to sources, Meta has agreed to report cases of child sexual abuse to law enforcement agencies. He said that this is the first step towards making online platforms safe for children and a lot more needs to be done in this direction.
