Insistence on uranium or the siege of Hormuz? Know why the Supreme Leader is adamant even after the deal with America is finalized
New Delhi: A 60-day ceasefire has been agreed upon between America and Iran, but its implementation is still awaiting the approval of the US President and the Supreme Leader of Iran.
major diplomatic success
A major diplomatic success has been achieved in reducing the military tension that has been going on for three months in the Middle East. Negotiators of America and Iran have agreed on the draft of a temporary agreement of 60 days. To implement this important ceasefire, the final approval is yet to be received from US President Donald Trump and Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
The decision is still pending
According to officials, the main objective of this 60-day proposed agreement is to prevent a possible full-scale war between the two countries, reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international ships and end the economic blockade imposed by the US Navy. Negotiators from both sides have reached a diplomatic agreement behind the scenes, but the deal is still pending.
Denial of existence of final draft
Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency has vehemently denied the existence of any such final draft. Iranian sources say that whenever a concrete agreement is finalized, it will first be shared with Pakistani mediators and then it will be officially announced.
Four key terms and outline of the agreement
In this bilateral conversation, both the countries have prepared a phased formula to avert the crisis.
uranium and nuclear programs
Under the agreement, Iran will insist that it will not try to make nuclear weapons. In the discussion of these 60 days, the process of removing the enriched uranium present in Iran will be given top priority.
Opening of the Strait of Hormuz
The Hormuz waterway, considered most important for global trade, will be completely free for the movement of ships. No toll or additional fee will be charged in return for this.
removal of sea mines
Within the first 30 days, Iran will have to locate and deactivate all the naval mines that the Iranian Navy and IRGC had laid in this waterway.
end of the US blockade
In return for Iran taking steps, the US will gradually lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports. This relief will depend on how safe the movement of merchant ships is in Hormuz.
