Investigation not completed in IIT Delhi student death case, committee asks for one week's time.

The five-member committee formed to investigate the case of death of a 31-year-old student in IIT Delhi has not yet submitted its report. The committee was supposed to complete its investigation and submit the report to the institute by September 30, but the report could not be submitted by the stipulated deadline. If the report does not come on time, the inquiry committee may ask for additional time. For this, approval will have to be taken from the institute. After getting the approval, the committee may be given a new deadline to complete the investigation and submit the report. After the incident, a five-member committee was formed by IIT Delhi to investigate the matter. The committee has to review the facts related to the incident and submit its report.

Why was the investigation report delayed?

According to members associated with the inquiry committee, there was a need to re-record the statements of some students. Due to this, the scope of investigation has increased slightly and it is taking more time than expected to prepare the report. According to the committee, the statements of all the students have now been recorded. At present, these statements and other information collected during the investigation are being compiled together. After this the report will be prepared and submitted. The committee said that the process of compiling the complete information and submitting the report may take about a week. In such a situation, there is a possibility of extending the deadline for the report.

What was the matter?

On August 23, a 31-year-old student had died on the IIT Delhi campus. The student was studying MSc in Physics. After the incident, students demonstrated on the campus for several days. The protesting students had demanded formation of a committee for an independent investigation into the matter. Following the demand of the students, the IIT Delhi administration formed a five-member inquiry committee on August 25. The committee had to investigate the facts related to the incident and submit its report.

Committee chairman recused himself

Former Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar, who was made its chairman in the initial phase of formation of the inquiry committee, had distanced himself from the committee citing personal reasons. After this the committee continued its investigation. Now the report is being prepared after collecting the statements of the students and other information.

The committee was reconstituted again

After former DGP Ashok Kumar separated from the committee, retired Delhi High Court judge Mukta Gupta was made the chairman of the inquiry committee. Along with this, the panel of the committee was reconstituted and two weeks' time was given to submit the report. The committee could not submit its report within the stipulated time till 14 September. After this the committee had asked for additional time to complete the investigation. After this, the new deadline for submitting the report was set as 30 September.
