What is BCCI afraid of in the last two matches of IPL: Why were players’ ‘smart glasses’ banned?

Mumbai: Now only two matches are left for the end of IPL 2026, but just before that, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has implemented a very strict rule in the league. BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) has completely banned the wearing of smart glasses by players and match officials.

Why was this tough decision taken?

The board fears that through these high-tech glasses, live streaming of the match, video calling or text messaging can be done using mobile data or Wi-Fi, which increases the risk of match fixing or betting. Actually, some companies were selling these smart sunglasses to players and support staff for marketing, after which the board immediately issued an advisory to the franchises.

BCCI has clearly said that as per the rules, these glasses are considered as audio-video recording devices. Therefore, players and officials will have to submit these glasses along with their mobile and smartwatch to the security officer before entering the Players and Match Official Area (PMOA) on the match day. Strict action will be taken if this is not done.
