IPL-19: Tilak gave life to MI with his first century, Gujarat Titans’ shameful defeat by 99 runs at home

Ahmedabad, 20 April. Former five-time champion Mumbai Indians (MI), stricken by four consecutive defeats in the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL-19), got a lifeline on Monday night when middle-order batsman Tilak Verma (101 not out, 45 balls, seven sixes, eight fours) showed aggressive attitude at a critical time and scored the first century of his IPL career. After that, the visiting bowlers, led by left-arm pacer Ashwani Kumar (4-24), who was playing the first match of the season, defeated Gujarat Titans, who had to accept a humiliating defeat of 99 runs.

Ashwani and company scattered GT for 100 runs only.

Mumbai Indians, forced to bat first at the Narendra Modi Stadium, scored 199 runs for five wickets in difficult conditions with the responsible innings of ‘Player of the Match’ Tilak and Naman Dheer (45 runs, 32 balls, one six, six fours). In reply, the host team was all out for 100 runs in 15.5 overs in front of the explosive bowling of Ashwani, Allah M Ghazanfar (2-17), Mitchell Santner (2-16), Jasprit Bumrah (1-15) and Hardik Pandya (1-18).

After the second win, Mumbai team jumped from the last position to seventh place.

It is noteworthy that after winning over Kolkata Knight Riders in their first match of the season, Mumbai Indians had to face four consecutive defeats. Well, with the help of this second win, by taking four points, it has now removed the tag of laggard from itself and jumped to the seventh position while KKR (three points) once again fell to the last position. On the other hand, Gujarat Titans faced defeat after three consecutive wins and are in sixth place after their third defeat in six matches.

Tilak scored a record 82 runs in the last 6 overs.

Talking about the match, 23-year-old Hyderabad batsman Tilak, who was ranked fifth, took command at a time when only 103 runs for four wickets in 14 overs were recorded on the score board. The 82 runs he scored in the last six overs is the highest score ever made by any batsman in any innings of IPL.

Jointly recorded the fastest century with Jayasuriya for MI

In this sequence, he also made the record of jointly scoring the fastest century for MI, which is equal to the century scored by Sanath Jayasuriya in 45 balls in the first season of IPL. The most surprising thing was that Tilak achieved this feat when he did not hit a single boundary on his first 20 balls. Thus, after such a slow start, it became the highest score of IPL till date.

Naman and Tilak took over the innings after a bad start

Apart from Tilak, Naman Dheer, who came third, also deserves praise, who perhaps scored runs in more difficult conditions, when Gujarat’s bowlers were in full rhythm and at 44 runs in the sixth overs. Quinton de Kock (13 runs, 11 balls, one six, one four), Danish Malewar (two runs) and Suryakumar Yadav (15 runs, 10 balls, one six, one four) included in the eleven in place of injured Rohit Sharma. Three top batsmen including Kagiso Rabada (3-33) had become victims.

Tilak along with Pandya broke 81 runs in 38 balls.

But in the presence of Tilak and Naman, Gujarat bowlers could no longer stick to the strategy and started making mistakes. The result was that Tilak and Naman made a partnership of 52 runs in 40 balls for the fourth wicket. Then when Prasidh Krishna returned Naman in the 13th over, Tilak broke 81 runs in 38 balls in the presence of captain Hardik Pandya (15 runs, 16 balls, one four).

73 runs were lost in the last 4 overs

Interestingly, 73 runs were lost in the last four overs. In this sequence, against Prasidh, who brought the last over, Tilak scored 22 runs including two sixes and two fours and completed his first century of his IPL career, taking the team to 199 runs. Apart from Rabada from Titans, Mohd. Siraj took 25 wickets and Prasidh Krishna took one wicket each for 54 runs.

score card

The effect of this unexpected pressure imposed by Tilak on Gujarat Titans was that Jasprit Bumrah took the wicket of Sai Sudarshan (0) on the very first ball of the innings, whereas he had not been able to take any wicket in the last six IPL matches. After this the wickets of Gujarat Titans kept falling continuously. In the end it all turned out to be so dramatic that the local team fell one run short of Tilak’s score of 101 runs.

Only Sundar could go above 20 for Titans

For Titans, Washington Sundar scored the highest score of 26 runs (16 balls, five fours) and apart from him, only Shahrukh Khan (17 runs, 13 balls, one six, one four), captain Shubman Gill (14 runs, 13 balls, three fours) and Kagiso Rabada (12 runs, 14 balls, two fours) could reach double figures.
