IPL Impact Player Rule: Why BCCI Is Unlikely to Scrap the Provision Before the 2027 Season

The Impact Player rule is likely to stay in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the 2027 season, with no major changes expected from the franchises ahead of next month's mini-auction. The IPL Governing Council has not issued a formal circular to the teams, but franchise officials are believed to understand that the Impact Player rule will be retained for at least one more edition.

The Impact Player rule was up for debate in August 2026, and the IPL Governing Council had requested feedback from all the franchises. While commercial people supported the retention of the rule, several cricketers were reluctant towards the new rule as it was affecting the balance between bat and ball. Still, it looks like the league has decided to retain the rule for IPL 2027.

“At least 4 teams have told IPL that they are going to face a lot of difficulty in their plans if this rule is removed now,” an IPL official was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

Why will the Impact Player rule continue in IPL 2027?

One of the main factors that has led to the rule likely staying as is, is that franchises are creating their squads and auction strategy and taking away the rule now would cause teams to rethink their lineups.

“It (the Impact Player rule) won't happen now as we're heading towards a mega-auction cycle. The next edition is the last one, so it's unlikely they will make any changes,” the official said.

The Impact Player rule was first used in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2022-23 and then officially introduced in the IPL in 2023. It has had a huge impact on teams.

It has caused a huge increase in high-scoring innings. In the first 15 IPL seasons, up to and including 2022, teams scored over 200 just 133 times. However, between 2023 and 2026, teams have scored over 200 195 times.

The scoring rate has also increased dramatically. In the first IPL season of 2008, teams scored an average of 7.48 runs per over. This has increased to 8.54 in 2022. In IPL 2026, teams scored an average of 9.85 runs per over.

Franchises have also changed their approach to building their squads. Sunrisers Hyderabad have taken a very attacking approach to batting. They focus on having a strong batting lineup and using the extra sub as an extra attacking weapon.

However, if the Impact Player rule were removed, teams may have to rethink their balance and focus more on picking specialist all-rounders and extra bowlers.

Who can benefit from the Impact Player rule continuing in IPL 2027?

Having the Impact Player rule will also mean that franchises will have more flexibility with their experienced players and those who may have fitness issues. Teams can bring on specialist batsmen or bowlers depending on the situation.

In the 2026 season, Rohit Sharma was one of those to stand out. He missed five games due to a hamstring injury. There was much discussion around whether he could be used as an Impact Player.

MS Dhoni also received a lot of attention throughout the 2026 season. There was much speculation around his fitness and whether he would play for Chennai Super Kings. However, there was always talk that he could play as an Impact Player.

As the rule is likely to carry on into IPL 2027, franchises will have the flexibility to manage their players' workload. It will also be an important factor in next month's mini-auction.
