Change of power in Iran: IRGC sidelines President, Khamenei’s security increased
IRGC Blocks Iran President Appointments: The standoff between the elected government in Iran and the powerful military organization IRGC is increasing. Amidst this tension, the army has further strengthened its hold on the political system of the country. Now the IRGC has completely blocked several key appointments of President Massoud Pezeshkian. Apart from this, the government’s access to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has also been limited by the military cordon.
Appointment of Intelligence Minister stopped
President Pezeshkian recently tried to appoint the country’s new intelligence minister. But under heavy pressure from IRGC commander Ahmed Vahidi, all the candidates were rejected. Vahidi clearly says that in times of war, sensitive posts should be directly selected by the Revolutionary Guard.
Decreased power of civil government
This major interference by the military organization has greatly limited the powers of Iran’s civilian government. The President has become a victim of political impasse due to increasing conflict between his government and the military leadership. It is believed that the control of the country’s power is now completely in the hands of the army.
Contact with supreme leader cut off
The IRGC is now completely controlling every communication up to the Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. A special council of senior military officers now filters all information reaching Khamenei. Because of this, the President’s report is not able to reach Khamenei and he has become isolated from the administration.
attempts to meet failed
President Pezeshkian has tried several times to hold urgent meetings with the Supreme Leader. Despite all these efforts, he has completely failed to talk to them till now. Due to this, the distance between the elected government and the supreme leader is continuously increasing.
tension over succession
There has been a tussle regarding succession within Iran’s leadership for a long time. Senior official Ali Asghar Hejazi had strongly opposed Mojtaba becoming Khamenei’s successor. He warned that if this happened, complete control would pass into the hands of the Revolutionary Guard.

Foreign policy will be affected
Experts say that this is not a coup but a big change happening gradually in the power structure. This new change may make Iran’s foreign policy even more strict in the future. This will reduce the scope for any future agreement with Washington to a great extent.
