According to Iranian officials, the attacks by America and Israel, starting from February 28, 2026, have damaged many historical places in the country. In particular, a missile attack near Arg Square on March 2, 2026 caused heavy damage to the Golestan Palace. During this tour, journalists had to wear helmets for safety reasons because repair and improvement work is still going on there.

Iran’s Minister of Cultural Heritage and Tourism Reza Salehi Amiri has strongly condemned these attacks. He said that about 140 historical sites in 20 provinces of the country have been damaged and there has been a loss of about 49 million dollars. At the same time, Ahmad Alavi, head of the cultural heritage committee of Tehran City Council, said that about 120 museums and cultural treasures were directly targeted, causing structural damage.

UNESCO has also confirmed damage to the Golestan Palace as well as Isfahan’s Chehel Sotoun Palace and Masjed-e Jāme. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed gratitude for UNESCO’s cooperation and demanded international organizations to take a strict stance on this issue. He accused Israel of bombing historical monuments in Iran.

In protest against this devastation, on July 4, 2026, common people and NGOs formed a human chain at Golestan Palace. The people present there protested against the attacks on historical buildings with placards and submitted a petition to UNESCO so that legal action could be taken in this matter.
