Iran launches two missile attacks on US warship, claims Iranian media

Tehran: Tensions in West Asia appear to be reaching a dangerous turning point. According to reports from Iranian media outlet Fars, two missiles were fired at a US warship transiting the Strait of Hormuz. It is claimed that the attack occurred when the US ship ignored Iran’s warning. However, an hour after this claim, the US denied any such attack. Iran’s state agency claimed that its navy prevented “enemy destroyers” from entering the Strait of Hormuz. According to the report, Iran issued a stern warning, after which the US and Israeli ships were prevented from proceeding. Iran maintains that it controls the security of this strategic waterway and will not accept any foreign military presence there.

Prior to this incident, Iran had clearly stated that any foreign military force, especially the US, approaching or attempting to enter the Strait of Hormuz would be attacked. Iran’s main military command, the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, issued a statement stating that the area is under its surveillance and that any uncoordinated military activity would not be tolerated. Iran issued this threat in response to the US

Meanwhile, the US has announced a major operation to free stranded ships in this waterway and restore trade. According to US Centcom, the mission, which began on May 4th, aims to provide safe passage to “innocent and neutral vessels.” The operation involves guided missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft, drones, and approximately 15,000 troops. Centcom Commander Admiral Brad Cooper stated that this mission is vital to the global economy and regional security.
