The incident came after a statement issued by the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which said that an Iranian cargo ship, which was detected trying to bypass the blockade near the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, was forcefully captured by the US Navy. The incident is the first major action against Iranian ports since the start of the US blockade.

The Iranian ship was heading towards Bandar Abbas in the northern Arabian Sea at the time, with a speed of 17 knots per hour. The US Navy repeatedly warned that the ship was violating the blockade. But after ignoring warnings for six hours, the American warship USS Spruance rammed a hole in the ship’s engine room and stopped her. After this, American soldiers of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit boarded the ship and took action, and the ship is currently in American custody.
