Iran’s ‘silent diplomacy’: Message given to the world through Quranic verses at Khamenei’s funeral
New Delhi: Former Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was given a final farewell in Tehran on July 4, 2026. Representatives of more than 30 countries and non-state organizations attended his funeral. But the biggest discussion is about the verses of Quran read during that time. Experts believe that this was not just a religious ritual. By choosing a different verse for each country, Iran tried to send a measured diplomatic message.
Saudi Arabia remembers ‘Battle of Badr’
The most shocking moment came when the Saudi Arabian delegation reached near the coffin. At that time verse 3:13 of Surah Al Imran was read. This verse is related to the ‘Battle of Badr’, which was fought on Saudi soil in 624 AD. In that the small Muslim army had defeated the big enemy army. International security analyst Shahin Modares called it ‘Cold War-era Kremlinology through verses’.
According to Middle East Eye, two meanings can be derived from this. One a reminder of shared Islamic history and the other a sharp nod to Riyadh. Iran was portraying itself as a sustainable power by fighting America and Israel, while Saudi was reminded of standing with Washington.
‘Axis of Resistance’ got encouragement
Verses on martyrdom and victory were chosen for Iran’s allies. The verse that mentioned people who keep their promises to Allah was read out for the Hamas representatives.
It was said for Hezbollah that those who trust in Allah should not be weak and should not mourn, because victory will be theirs. Verses of strength and courage were recited to the Houthis of Yemen. With this, Tehran assured its close ones that it stands with them.
Soft tone for India, Russia, China
For friendly countries like Russia, China and India, verses not of war but of consolation and righteousness were chosen. It was said for China that victory comes only from Allah. Whereas for Russia it was said that in the end the decision is in favor of the righteous people. A short and gentle excerpt from the section ‘Don’t be weak and don’t mourn’ for India was read out.
After the funeral, Iran also thanked India. Said that India’s presence is a ‘priceless proof’ of the enduring relations between the two countries and the Iranian people will never forget this solidarity. Analysts say Iran kept friends away from its ‘axis of resistance’.
Praised his colleagues, but did not drag them into his ideological battle. Shaheen Modares wrote, "Each delegation received a rectangle. The Saudis were scolded, the Turks were embarrassed, the proxies were consoled. Yesterday the coffin was speaking in verses." This is not the first time. Even in April, Iran responded to American threats with verses from the Quran.
