Is NCERT releasing the book which was banned by SC by replacing it?
The Supreme Court had expressed displeasure over a controversial chapter on the judiciary added in the NCERT’s Class 8 Social Science book. Now this book will be re-released after making changes. According to ANI report, a new version of the book has been prepared and it is likely to be released within a week. This book became the center of controversy due to the inclusion of the controversial chapter related to the judiciary.
A chapter related to the judiciary was included in the second part of this book, ‘Exploring Society: India and Beyond’. This chapter became the main cause of controversy. In this chapter, problems like corruption in the judiciary, long pendency of cases and shortage of judges were mentioned. Expressing objection to this chapter, the Supreme Court took a tough stand and banned the publishing, distribution or sale of this book and sharing it in digital form in the entire country.

Why did the Supreme Court ban it?
The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of this matter. While hearing this case, the Supreme Court had said that the content included in the book can harm the image of the judiciary and can have a negative impact on the students. Considering it a serious matter, the court had ordered to confiscate all the copies of this book and remove the online content. All the copies that had gone to the market were recalled and efforts were made to locate those that had already been purchased.
NCERT admitted the mistake
After the controversy over this matter escalated, NCERT had withdrawn the book from the market and banned its distribution. NCERT also admitted that there was an error in judgment in this matter and hence decided to withdraw the book. A total of 38 copies of this book were sold from the NCERT counter. After the court’s comment, buyers were called and asked to return the book.

New version will be available soon
Now NCERT has reviewed the controversial parts of this book and a fresh revised version has been prepared. Information about removal of the chapter related to judiciary has come to light. According to the ANI report, changes have been made in the content of the book with the help of experts so that there is no controversy of any kind in future. Along with this, the report also states that after getting the final approval of the revised book, printing will be started and it can be released within a week. After the start of the new academic session, students were waiting for this book. Therefore NCERT is preparing to make it available soon.
