Earlier on Thursday (November 05, 2026), during talks with political parties, 67 members of the 120-seat 'Knesset' (Israeli Parliament) supported Eysenkot, while 46 members recommended Netanyahu's name. According to the renowned news agency, 7 MPs did not support any candidate.
Although Eisenkot has received more recommendations, he still faces the challenge of forming a coalition that can command a majority in Parliament. The support of Arab-led parties has strengthened his position, but divisions within the opposition could impact the government formation process.
President Isaac Herzog said that the final decision would depend on which candidate he thinks can successfully form a government. He said on Thursday that the results of the consultation may seem clear, but under the law I have the right to decide who has the capacity to form the government. This is not entirely clear given the situation of vetoing each other between factions and within the factions themselves.
Arab parties supported Eysenkot
The 11-seat Joint List and the eight-seat Raam party both recommended Eysenkot's name during their meetings with Herzog. His support brought the total number of recommendations Eysenkot received to 67, exceeding the 61 required for a majority in the Knesset (the Israeli parliament). However, these recommendations do not guarantee that all 19 Arab MPs will join the Eysenkot-led government. Yisrael Beitenu leader Avigdor Liberman has previously opposed a government that rests on the support of Arab parties. He has criticized Arab lawmakers for not explicitly calling Hamas a terrorist organization, although Arab parties have condemned Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
'United Torah Judaism' refuses to support Netanyahu
