Chandigarh, October 9, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Jagtar Singh Hawara, convicted in the assassination case of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh and currently lodged in Mandoli Central Jail in Delhi, has agreed to accept one-day parole to visit Punjab and meet his ailing 81-year-old mother, Narinder Kaur.
The development was disclosed on Friday by Gurcharan Singh, Hawara's dharmi father (spiritual father), who said the family had agreed to the shorter arrangement after efforts to secure 10 days' parole failed to produce a favorable outcome.
According to Gurcharan Singh, Hawara's mother's health has been deteriorating, prompting the family and those pursuing the matter to consider a brief visit rather than prolong the wait for permission for an extended period.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had earlier recommended 10 days' parole for Hawara to enable him to visit his native village and spend time with his mother. However, the proposal reportedly could not be finalized because of security and other procedural considerations.
Gurcharan Singh, who is also associated with the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha, said Hawara and his family had now consented to the possibility of his being brought to Punjab for a single day before being taken back to Delhi.
No Written Parole Order Yet
Gurcharan Singh clarified that the proposed arrangement had not received formal written approval.
He said the family was in telephonic contact with a person communicating on behalf of the Union Government, but nothing had so far been confirmed in writing.
According to him, the arrangement currently under discussion involves transporting Hawara from Delhi to Punjab under appropriate security arrangements, allowing him to meet his mother and family members, and returning him to jail..
He indicated that Hawara could potentially spend around seven to eight hours with his family, excluding the time required for travel, although the precise arrangements remain subject to official confirmation.
Gurcharan Singh said the final decision on how the visit would be organized rested with the government and the authorities concerned.
Family Concerned Over Mother's Health
The family has been seeking temporary release for Hawara in view of his mother's advancing age and deteriorating health.
With the longer parole request remaining unresolved, the family decided that even a one-day meeting would be preferable to further delay.
However, no date has been fixed for the proposed visit, and the necessary written permission and legal formalities are still awaited.
The development, therefore, represents Hawara's consent to a proposed arrangement rather than confirmation that parole has been granted.
