Jai Moondra Inside Story: Just days after making a splash on his T20 International (T20I) debut against India, Rajasthan-born fast bowler Jai Moondra has added another major achievement to his name. He played his first ODI for Ireland in the five-match ODI series against Afghanistan .
The 29-year-old fast bowler has made his mark on the international stage ever since he arrived. He performed brilliantly in his first T20I series against the country he once dreamed of playing for (India).
Mundra surprised everyone by dismissing Sanju Samson off the very first ball of his international career. He then claimed his second wicket by dismissing Shivam Dube.
Not only that, in the second T20I, he once again dismissed Sanju Samson for a duck. He also dismissed Abhishek Sharma for a duck and took the crucial wicket of Shreyas Iyer (10 runs). Mundra took 3 wickets for 32 runs, playing a key role in Ireland’s historic 2-0 series win.

The answer to this question begins thousands of kilometers away from Dublin, in the Tonk district of Rajasthan. When Jai Mundra left India for Ireland to study, he not only lost his family but also his first love: cricket. Jai arrived in Ireland to pursue a Masters (M.Tech) in Electronics and Communications from the Technological University Dublin.
But whenever he saw children playing cricket in Dublin’s parks or small fields, his steps would stop. He would watch them appeal, celebrate wickets, bowl from long run-ups, and dive. Then he would silently walk away, heavy bags of books slung over his shoulders—the same shoulders that once carried cricket kit bags.
Jai may have left cricket in India, but it never left his heart. He kept his dream alive by finding time between office and coding deadlines and toiling away at Leinster Cricket Club (LCC).
Finally, the dream that remained unfulfilled in India was fulfilled in Ireland. Jai received his Ireland debut cap against the same team he had dreamed of playing for since childhood.
A ‘Pakistani’ connection behind Jai’s success
Few people know that there’s a Pakistani connection behind Jay Mundra’s success. The man who taught Jay the art of swing and pace is Bilal Azhar. Bilal is a left-arm fast bowler from Islamabad, Pakistan, who moved to Ireland in 2008.
Jai met Bilal when he resumed cricket at Leinster Cricket Club in Dublin. Bilal, who idolized Wasim Akram, recognized Jai’s talent during a pre-season net session. After that, Jai’s life became a routine of “office, cricket, sleep, and then the same routine.” Bilal was Jai’s greatest mentor throughout this journey.
“He came to the nets and just started bowling. I was batting that day and I noticed he had a lot of pace. We immediately knew there was something special about this guy,” Bilal told the Times of India.
Bilal added, “His bowling was definitely fast, but he was bowling a lot of no-balls. We worked on the basics and taught him to control his speed. Jai learns new things quickly, listens, and works hard. Even during the off-season, he did rigorous training like parachute runs to improve his speed.”
Jai’s dream debut against India was not surprising at all for Bilal.Â
