Nelson Dilipkumar was initially sceptical about making Jailer 2 with superstar Rajinikanth, despite the success of the 2023 film. However, the filmmaker eventually agreed to return for the sequel after reconsidering the idea and developing the script. He also postponed a Telugu film commitment to work on the much-awaited sequel.
The revelation was made by Rajinikanth during a special pre-release show for Jailer 2which premiered on Sun NXT on Friday. The event featured the film’s cast and crew in place of the traditional pre-release celebrations.
Rajinikanth reveals why he agreed to Jailer 2
Rajinikanth revealed that he is generally not fond of sequels, as he believes filmmakers often try to recreate the success of the original film by adding more commercial elements.
The actor said he had previously turned down offers for sequels to his films Basha and Cheat. However, watching Jailer on OTT made him reconsider his stance.
Explaining what convinced him, Rajinikanth pointed to the film’s climax, in which the antagonist Varman warns Muthuvel Pandian that his extensive network would not spare him. He also recalled the revelation involving three containers worth Rs 1,000 crore.
According to the superstar, these plot points offered enough scope to develop the story further and explore the possibilities of a sequel.
Nelson Dilipkumar initially hesitated to make Jailer 2
Rajinikanth also revealed that Nelson was initially reluctant to return for Jailer 2. Following the success of the first film, the director was reportedly in demand across the Hindi, Telugu and Tamil film industries, with several stars and production houses approaching him with projects.
When Rajinikanth approached him with the idea of a sequel, Nelson reportedly felt that the first film had already explored its story to the fullest.
However, the filmmaker reconsidered the proposal after a month and agreed to take the project forward. Rajinikanth said Nelson took his time to develop the script while the actor was busy shooting for films such as Vettaiyan, Lal Salaam and Coolie.
Nelson’s decision to prioritise Jailer 2 also meant postponing a Telugu film commitment.
Was Nelson Dilipkumar supposed to work with Jr NTR?
Nelson’s Telugu film plans had earlier sparked speculation about a possible collaboration with Jr NTR. In April 2025, the actor hinted at working on a project produced by Naga Vamsi during the success event of MAD Square.
His comments led fans to speculate that the project could bring Jr NTR and Nelson together. However, the actor confirmed a film with producer Naga Vamsi and filmmaker Trivikram Srinivas in June 2026, with reports suggesting that the project could be based on Lord Murugan.
There has also been speculation about Nelson pitching a project to Allu Arjun, who is currently working with director Atlee on Raw. However, a collaboration between Nelson and Allu Arjun has not been officially confirmed.
