Don’t have courage to tell the truth: Jana Nayagan director on film’s 5-month delay

The official release date of the highly-anticipated Tamil political thriller Jana Supervisor remains one of the industry’s biggest mysteries as the film’s director H Vinoth appears to be keeping his cards close to his chest.

When cornered about the extensive delays of the Vijay starrer at a recent promotional event, Vinoth offered a cryptic response, admitting he lacked the “courage” to reveal the behind-the-scenes “truth”.

Starring actor-politician and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay alongside Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol, and Pooja Hegde, Jana Supervisor has reportedly been stuck in limbo for over five months as it awaits clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The issue of Jana Nayagan’s prolonged delay surfaced during a promotion for director Pandiraj’s upcoming project, Parimala & Co. Held on the entertainment channel SS Music, the roundtable discussion featured H Vinoth as well alongside prominent industry voices including filmmakers Pa. Ranjith and Pandiraj, choreographer Sandy Master, and actor Santhosh.

‘Jana Nayagan’ release

During the panel, the host asked the definitive question keeping millions of fans on edge: “Tamil Nadu has already asked you this question; now I’m asking it too. When can we expect Jana Supervisor to release?”

As the crowd broke into cheers, Vinoth deflected with a smile and a heavy dose of irony: “That is not up to me. I don’t even have the courage to tell you the truth. Even if I had the courage, you wouldn’t have the courage to share it.”

While his witty response drew immediate laughter from co-panelists Pa. Ranjith and Santhosh, the underlying tension has reignited intense speculation over what’s holding back the film’s release and its prolonged battle with the censor board.

The uncertainty surrounding Jana Supervisor has intensified over recent weeks.

No June release

Fans caught a brief glimmer of hope when online ticketing platforms like BookMyShow listed the movie for a June release, with some trackers pointing specifically to June 19.

This sparked heavy speculation that the political thriller was being positioned as a mega-release around Chief Minister Vijay’s 52nd birthday on June 22.

However, producer Venkat K Narayana of KVN Productions quickly tempered expectations, clarifying that the film is still awaiting its mandatory clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Weighing in on the administrative deadlock, Tamil Nadu Minister for Film Technology and Cinematograph Act, Rajmohan Arumugam, stated that a theatrical rollout hinges entirely on securing the censor certificate.

Legal resolution pending

The minister emphasised that no project can be legally blocked or delayed for political or extraneous reasons, provided it complies with all statutory regulations.

Originally slated for a blockbuster Pongal release in January—strategically timed ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections—Jana Supervisor was derailed at the eleventh hour by certification hurdles. Following structural objections from a member of the CBFC examining committee, the film was pushed to a revising committee, grinding the process to a halt.

While producer Venkat K Narayana approached the judiciary for emergency relief, a legal resolution remains pending. Adding to the makers’ woes, the project suffered a major security breach in April when leaked footage surfaced online, resulting in multiple arrests.
