Now mangoes will not be exported to Japan! Ban imposed after 20 years, you will be stunned to know the reason
While on one hand Indian mangoes are being appreciated globally, on the other hand Japan has stopped importing mangoes from India this season after an inspection team found irregularities in the production units of the country.
After almost two decades, Japan has banned Indian mangoes. Earlier, Japan had banned Indian mangoes in 1986 after reports of fly infestation in the fruit.
Why was the ban imposed?
Every year, before mango season, Japan sends inspectors to monitor vapor heat treatment (VHT), a non-chemical quarantine process that exposes mangoes to pest-free conditions in hot and humid air. Also this year, a team of quarantine officials from Japan that visited Rehmanpur in Uttar Pradesh for inspection in March found deficiencies in fumigation and related disinfection measures in Indian treatment facilities, leading to the country banning the import of mangoes. Yokohama Plant Protection Association, a public interest organization supporting quarantine plans in Japan, has informed that consignments of mangoes with inspection certificates issued by India on or after March 25 this year will no longer be accepted, ET reported.
Disappointment among mango exporters
Japan is known for the quality of its products, be it mangoes or fish. Keeping in mind the strict regulations of Japan, the Government of India has opened several VHT plants in India, starting with the Tirupati VHT plant in 2007. Since then India has been exporting mangoes after careful processing. Although Japan is not among the most “important” buyers, exporters are still disappointed by the development.
