This country is troubled by decreasing population! Giving money to youth to fall in love and form relationships

Digital Desk. The Government of Japan has come up with a unique plan to deal with the serious problem of declining population. Now youth are being encouraged to use dating apps and the government is also providing financial assistance for this. The objective is clear—to inspire youth towards relationships, marriage and family. Kochi Prefecture of Japan has started a scheme named ‘Meeting Support Project Grant’. Under this scheme, unmarried youth will be encouraged to connect with each other through dating apps. The government wants the youth to know each other on these platforms, form relationships and later get married.

In fact, indifference about relationships and marriage is continuously increasing among the youth in Japan. The main reasons behind this are believed to be rising inflation, changing lifestyle, increasing focus on career and economic instability. Many youth are avoiding marriage and having children, due to which the population of the country is continuously decreasing. Under this scheme, eligible unmarried youth aged 20 to 39 years will be given a subsidy of up to 20,000 yen i.e. about Rs 11,752 annually. This amount will be given for the expenses of registration and subscription on dating apps, so that it can be easier for the youth to use these platforms.

This scheme has been implemented from 1 April 2026. The government hopes that this will lead to more young people actively pursuing relationships and marriage, which will help in future population growth. The government is not limited to online platforms only. Organizations which work to connect people offline are also being given financial assistance. Through such events, youth will get a chance to meet face to face, which will increase the chances of strengthening relationships and reaching marriage.

The continuously falling birth rate in Japan has become a big concern for the government. The number of children born in the year 2025 will be around 7 lakh, which is considered to be the lowest in many decades. Along with this, Japan is also among the fastest aging countries in the world. In the year 2024, the number of people aged 65 years and above will exceed 3.6 crore, which is about 29 percent of the total population. The decline in youth population and increase in the number of elderly people is having a deep impact on the economic and social balance of the country. This is the reason why the Japanese government is now doing such new experiments so that the youth can get attracted towards marriage and family again.
