Japanese BBQ chain Gyu-Kaku to close last outlet in Singapore

Gyu-Kaku Singapore announced the closure of its Chijmes restaurant in the City Hall area in a social media post earlier this week.

The chain said customers can redeem all rewards accumulated under its loyalty program until the closure date.

It also thanked customers for their continued patronage and support over the years.

The announcement follows the closure of four other Gyu-Kaku outlets in Singapore this year: VivoCity on Sept. 28, The Star Vista in Buona Vista on May 1, Kinex mall in Paya Lebar on March 31, and Waterway Point in Punggol on March 9, Channel News Asia reported.

The chain closed other outlets at UE Square, The Centrepoint and Novena Square in 2025, The Straits Times reported.

Known for its Japanese-style yakiniku, which allows diners to grill meat at their tables, Gyu-Kaku serves a range of beef cuts, including Japanese wagyu, as well as pork, seafood and other dishes.

Founded in Japan in 1996, the chain has expanded to several markets overseas, including the U.S., Hong Kong and Indonesia.

Gyu-Kaku did not give a reason for the closure of its last remaining Singapore outlet.

Singapore saw 2,101 food business closures between January and July this year, an increase of 25.1% year-on-year amid rising costs and high rents, according to the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority.
