Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office, Jitendra Singh, and Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda visited Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Tuesday night to inquire about activist Sonam Wangchuk’s health, according to sources.
Wangchuk, who began an indefinite hunger strike on June 28, continues his fast despite being transferred from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital under judicial supervision, following directions from the Delhi High Court. His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, confirmed that he would maintain the hunger strike in solidarity with students allegedly injured during police action.
Thousands of students and supporters resumed their agitation at Jantar Mantar on Tuesday after violent clashes on Monday during a march towards Parliament. More than 5,000 protesters gathered, reclaiming the protest site. The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), leading the movement, announced that while the protest would continue indefinitely, further marches towards Parliament would be suspended, citing excessive police force during Monday’s demonstration.
The Delhi High Court directed Wangchuk’s immediate transfer from Safdarjung Hospital after hearing a plea filed by Angmo. The Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia, accepted Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s submission that the Center had no objection to the transfer.
The court ordered Medanta Hospital to form a specialized medical team to supervise Wangchuk’s treatment and instructed the activist to follow all prescribed medical advice while remaining under constant supervision.
