Before John Campbell's heroics in Guwahati, the record for fastest ODI fifty by a West Indies batter against India belonged to none other than the “Universe Boss”, Chris Gayle
Gayle first etched his name into the record books back in November 2002 at Ahmedabad, where he smashed a fifty in exactly 30 balls. He would go on to beat that record by 17 years before equaling it again, this time in Port of Spain in 2019, also scoring a half-century in 30 deliveries.

The record appeared unassailable and was considered one of the best ever put together by Gayle, who for long held the record on his own for the fastest century and fifty by a West Indies batsman. However, John Campbell came to Guwahati looking to move past Gayle and etch his name into the record books too, bettering the previous best by a batter in the format by one delivery.

He and his partner in the opening stand, Greaves, gave a great start as they put on a brilliant 135-run opening together.
Going from a 49-ball fifty in the first game to a blistering 29-ball assault in Guwahati is a reduction of 20 deliveries. It demonstrated an opener who could hold on, but when allowed free rein in the north-eastern city of Guwahati, could unleash a storm, capable of breaking records set by the greatest ever to play the game.
