The England Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed former veteran batsman Jonathan Trott as the new head coach of the England Lions team. Trott will take charge of the coaching staff of the Lions team on the tours of West Indies, South Africa and Sri Lanka in the upcoming winter season. He will replace the team's former coach Andrew Flintoff, who resigned from his post in early August 2026.
Jonathan Trott becomes the new head coach of England Lions
On 21 September 2026, the England Cricket Board officially approved Trott's name. Earlier, Trott had played an excellent role as the acting coach in the victory of the Lions team in two T20 matches against Sri Lanka, after which, in view of his excellent performance, the board has given him this big responsibility permanently.
Jonathan will replace Andrew Flintoff
Jonathan Trott left the post of head coach of the Afghanistan team after the end of the T20 World Cup 2026 in February this year. He then had short stints with several other teams during the summer season, including the Republic of Ireland and Glamorgan Cricket Club. In such a situation, this permanent responsibility with the England Lions team is being considered a big milestone for his coaching career.

On the other hand, veteran Andrew Flintoff had decided to step down from the post of Lions head coach in August. He took this step immediately after finalizing his contract to become the head coach of the Sydney Thunder franchise in Australia's Big Bash League (BBL), due to which the responsibility of coaching the Lions team has now fallen into the hands of Trott.
Trott has a long relationship with England Lions
Jonathan Trott's relationship with the England Lions team is very old and deep. As a player, he has played 22 matches for this team. Before entering England's main Test team in 2009, his brilliant performance for the Lions gave him real recognition at the international level. This is why he considers this entire program very important for shaping the future of young cricketers.
After getting this new and big responsibility, Trott expressed his happiness and said, “I am very excited about this role. Playing for the Lions team was a very turning point in my own cricket career. Since I have gone through this phase myself, I understand very well how useful this platform is for improving the youth mentally and technically. This experience prepares the players both on and off the field to face the big challenges of international cricket. I am fully prepared to work closely with all the players and support staff and bring their talent to the world.”
