53 year old elephant 'Joymoti' injured in flood was airlifted and will be treated in the special hospital of Jamnagar, Vantara.

Jamnagar: Joymoti Elephant, a 53-year-old elephant who was seriously injured after being washed away in the severe floods of July, has been airlifted to Vantara in Jamnagar for special treatment. He was rescued with the help of local people and government agencies after being swept away in the raging flood waters in Nagaland. Joymothy has several serious wounds on her body, her right eye is badly damaged and she also has a limp in her hind leg due to an old injury.

Despite first aid at the local level, his age, serious injuries and difficulty in mobility required treatment in a specialized hospital. He is now being given special treatment for eye and other injuries along with detailed medical examination at Vantara. Nutrition and other necessary care will also be provided.

Airlifting a seriously injured elephant to a hospital for treatment is said to be the first effort of its kind in India. Joymoti was airlifted to save her from the long and tiring road journey. Special care was taken for his health, comfort and safety during the journey.

Vantara has clarified that bringing Joymoti to Jamnagar is not a permanent transfer. He has been brought here only for special and necessary treatment. Vantara has also proposed to build three wildlife veterinary centers in Assam, including a dedicated center for elephants, so that in future, injured wildlife can get better treatment closer to their area.
