To deal with this mega-disaster, about 30,000 Venezuelan government employees as well as 3,281 international rescue workers from all over the world are engaged in relief and rescue operations day and night. So far, more than 400 patients have been given emergency treatment and about 30 serious surgeries have been performed in the temporary ‘field hospital’ set up for quick assistance to the injured. Juan Zapata fought death for 55 hours and won
Amidst this catastrophe, a story of miracle has come to light from a hospital in La Guaira, which has kept the hopes of the rescue teams alive. A man named Juan Zapata was trapped under the debris of his collapsed house for 55 hours. Juan, narrating his ordeal, said, “I was going to take a bath after having dinner, when a strong shock threw me from one corner to another. When I opened my eyes, I was not in my fifth-floor flat, but buried under the suffocating debris.”
Civilian rescue workers found them two hours and seven days after the earthquake. Juan has several broken ribs and deep wounds on his body. Moaning in pain, Juan said, “My house, phone, identity card and all my property were lost, but I survived, this is the biggest miracle of God.” At present, having lost his identity card and phone, Juan is yearning to contact his daughter living in America and his sister living in Canada.
