Just a few days after the ceasefire, Pakistan shelled Afghanistan, China’s mediation failed
New Delhi: Tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan has increased once again. The recent ceasefire brokered by China has been broken. In April 2026, Pakistan launched a mortar and missile attack in the eastern region of Afghanistan, in which 7 people were killed and 85 people were injured.
University and home were targeted
Shells and missiles fired by Pakistan fell on a university (Syed Jamaluddin Afghani University) and nearby houses in Asadabad area of Kunar province of Afghanistan. According to Afghan officials, the dead and injured include civilians, students, women and children.
The Taliban government has condemned this attack and called it a violation of its sovereignty. Pakistan Army says that this action was taken on the basis of intelligence information. Pakistan claims that they had targeted terrorist targets like Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and ISIS-K.
Why did China’s ceasefire fail?
In early April 2026, China facilitated peace talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan (Taliban government). A meeting of both the parties was held in Urumchi city of China. China’s effort was to maintain peace on the border between the two countries and stop terrorism. There was hope for a ceasefire for a few days, but the old problems soon returned.
Pakistan continues to allege that Afghanistan is harboring TTP terrorists and they are carrying out attacks in Pakistan. The Taliban denies these allegations. The result was that the ceasefire was broken within a few days and the attacks started again.
Old dispute between the two countries
Tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan has been going on for many years. Pakistan’s main allegation is that terrorist groups like TTP are secretly carrying out attacks in Pakistan on the soil of Afghanistan. TTP attacks had increased in Pakistan in 2025 and 2026. In response to this, Pakistan has carried out attacks inside Afghanistan several times.
Afghanistan considers them an attack on its sovereignty and says that Pakistan is targeting innocent civilians. The process of allegations and counter-allegations continues from both sides.
