Kailash Kher Says Great Love Songs Must Come From the Soul to Truly Move Listeners

Renowned singer and composer Kailash Kher, who recently released the romantic track 'Tham Jaa'believes a truly impactful love song must emerge from the soul and connect deeply with its listeners.

Speaking exclusively to IANS, Kher said that when a song carries genuine emotion, listeners can become so immersed in it that they lose count of how many times they have played it.

Asked what defines a great love song — meaningful lyrics, a melodious voice or its ability to heal and stay with the listener — Kher said authenticity is what makes music truly powerful.

“Whenever something is genuinely good, as I said, if something comes from your soul, then every word, every sound, every melody, and every emotion within it touches you,” he said.

Kher added that when a song creates such a connection, people keep listening to it repeatedly without worrying about how many times they have heard it.

“You just keep playing and become immersed in it,” he said, describing the experience as being mesmerized.

Kher was also asked about the responsibility of artists while addressing sensitive subjects through emotions and social realities, particularly whether understanding the context is as important as protecting creative freedom.

Responding, he said artists are inherently sensitive and that sensitivity is central to the identity of an artist.

“The stage exists to win people's hearts,” Kher said, adding that speaking without sensitivity or making meaningless statements merely to entertain people could undermine that purpose. He acknowledged that satire can also constitute a form of art, with individuals expressing their own perspectives.

Kher stressed that an artist's thoughts should ultimately be guided by purity and empathy.

According to him, genuine artistic expression is meaningful when a person can feel sadness for another's pain, make others happy through their own laughter and use their work to spread joy.

“That is the identity of an artist,” he added.
