Kawhi Leonard has broken his silence following the NBA’s ruling in the Clippers case. The player released a statement through his new agent, Harrison Gaines, giving his side of the story just hours after the conclusion of the salary-cap circumvention investigation that resulted in an unprecedented punishment for Los Angeles.
The NBA took away five first-round Draft picks from the Clippers, from 2029 through 2033fined the franchise $30 million and suspended Steve Ballmer for one year. Leonard, meanwhile, avoided both a suspension and having his contract voided, receiving a $700,000 fine instead.
And it was after the league’s decision that Kawhi decided to speak out.

Leonard’s statement begins with him taking responsibility, although he immediately makes an important distinction between his own actions and those of the people who managed his affairs.
Integrity and respect for this sport are fundamental to who I am. I take full responsibility for the errors in judgment made by people close to me, and I regret the distractions this situation has caused for the fans and my family

The statement is an unavoidable reference to Dennis Robertsonthe player’s uncle and former business manager, with whom Leonard ended their professional relationship last June.
Robertson was one of the central figures in the investigation’s findings. According to the NBA, he acted on Leonard’s behalf by pressuring the Clippers to help the player secure additional off-court financial opportunities. The league has banned him for five years from any professional relationship with NBA teams and their affiliates.
Kawhi denies knowing about the Clippers’ plan
It is in the second part of his statement, however, that Leonard takes an even firmer position. Kawhi does not deny signing the agreements that came under investigation, but maintains that he did so without knowing about any plan to circumvent the NBA salary cap.
I signed my contract with the Clippers, as well as the agreements in question, in good faith, fully intending to fulfill my obligations and without any knowledge of any intent by anyone to circumvent the salary cap

That clarification is particularly important in light of the conclusions reached by the independent investigation conducted by Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.
According to the NBA, Leonard benefited from off-court financial opportunities obtained with the assistance of the Clippers. The league determined that the franchise facilitated deals with four partner companies – Aspiration Partners, Boingo Wireless, Daktronics and Lockton Insurance – while also covering certain personal expenses connected to the player and his representatives.
Leonard, therefore, is not disputing the existence of the agreements. His position is different: he claims he did not know that the intention behind those arrangements was to circumvent NBA rules.
Leonard is already looking ahead to Toronto: “I want to close this chapter”
No suspension and no voided contract mean one thing above all for Leonard: the opportunity to leave Los Angeles behind and focus on his return to the Toronto Raptors.
And it is Toronto that Kawhi chooses to focus on at the end of his statement.
For 15 years, my priority has been giving everything to my family, basketball and the people I share the court with. As I return to Toronto, I am focused on what I can control: closing this chapter and moving forward with a fresh start

The NBA’s decision removed one of the main obstacles to Leonard’s return to the Raptors: during the investigation, the move had remained on hold because of the possibility that Kawhi could be suspended or that his contract could be voided.
Leonard and Clippers: two very different reactions
Ultimately, the Clippers and Leonard are coming out of the same situation looking in completely different directions. Los Angeles wants to continue its fight against the NBA, while Kawhi appears to have no interest in doing the same.
His message is fairly simple: he acted in good faith, he takes responsibility for what happened around him, and now he wants to focus on something else. No attack on the league and, above all, no desire to keep the issue in the public spotlight for months.
Because now there is Toronto. The Clippers case is not necessarily over, but Kawhi’s chapter in Los Angeles is. And Leonard seems far more interested in the next chapter than in continuing to discuss the previous one.
