‘Keep him there’: Pawan Khera’s jibe at CEC Gyanesh Kumar over Trump’s remark

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera in a sarcastic jibe at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar urged US President Donald Trump to take and keep the CEC in the US after President Donald Trump cited India while calling for stricter voter identification rules in the US.

‘Keep him there’

Taking to X Khera stated that Kumar should be sent to the US with India’s EVMs. “Please take Gyanesh Kumar Gupta to America. And keep him there. We will send our EVMs too by the next available flight.”

Khera’s remarks come at a time when Trump has renewed his push for the SAVE America Act, a proposed US law requiring proof of citizenship for federal voter registration and voter identification.

Khera's Trump jab over CEC remarks

Khera referred to Trump’s “insults and bullying” towards India adding “This is the least we can do for you.” He closed with, “To SIR With Love, from India,” referring to the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR, of electoral rolls.

Trump had earlier said that India’s Chief Election Commissioner had asked how US elections could be held without valid photo identification.

“Earlier this month, India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, asked our Administration – How can you have Elections in the US without a valid Photo ID?” stated Trump in a post on Truth Social.

The Republican leader referred to India’s 2024 Lok Sabha election, saying more than 646 million people voted and less than 1 per cent voted through postal ballots. He said every voter had valid photo ID.

Congress-Election Commission face-off

Khera’s response comes amid Congress’s dispute with Kumar and the Election Commission over rolls and SIR. The dispute intensified in 2025 after Rahul Gandhi accused the Election Commission of “vote chori” and alleged irregularities.

The Election Commission rejected the allegations and asked Rahul for an affidavit. Kumar later said Rahul should provide an affidavit or apologise.
