Kia India is preparing for a major change in its product strategy in the Indian automobile market. The company aims to launch electric and hybrid versions of 8 out of its 10 models by 2030. Notably, instead of relying solely on purely electric vehicles, Kia is now focusing on expanding its strong hybrid and company-fitted CNG vehicles.
1. Electric Portfolio
Kia currently has 4 electric models available in the Indian market – EV6, EV9, Carens Clavis EV and Cyros EV. The Cyros EV has helped Kia gain a strong foothold in the budget-friendly electric car segment.
- Seltos EV : The company is currently considering bringing an all-electric version of the popular ‘Seltos’ car, but a final decision has not been taken yet.
- Future plans: Kia will add another new EV to reach its target of 8 electric/hybrid models by 2030. This could include a compact SUV like the ‘Sonet’.

2. Special emphasis on strong hybrid cars
Kia is working on locally producing hybrid technology to keep car prices low and attract Indian customers.
- Kia Sorento : This 3-row SUV is likely to be launched in India in the coming months. It could be Kia’s first strong-hybrid car in India. The car is expected to be assembled in India.
- Carnival and Seltos Hybrid: The company will offer a hybrid option in its premium MPV ‘Carnival’ along with the existing diesel engine. Apart from this, the Seltos is also likely to get a hybrid powertrain.

3. Factory-fitted CNG models
Along with electric and hybrid, Kia is quietly preparing to enter the CNG segment.
- Currently, Kia’s ‘Carens’ is fitted with a CNG kit at the dealer level. However, the company is now working on a proper factory-fitted CNG system.
- Kia plans to offer CNG technology across a range of models, rather than limiting it to just one segment.
In short…
Charging infrastructure and EV prices are still a big challenge in India. In such a situation, strong hybrid cars are a good option, while CNG cars are known for their low running costs. This multiple fuel way chosen by Kia, recognizing the needs of all types of customers, can be very beneficial in the Indian market!
